In India, Aljazeera reported at least 10 people were killed and up to 50 more are trapped after a section of a coal mine collapsed in the state of Jharkand.

Around 23 miners and dozens of vehicles were buried when about 250 metres of the Lalmatia open-pit mine collapsed as the workers were heading towards the exit, Thursday evening. Hundreds of workers frantically searched for the missing overnight but search efforts had to be delayed this morning due to bad weather, including fog.

 

Aljazeera notes that Jharkand is one of the poorest Indian states with nearly 40% living under the poverty line, but is also rich in mineral wealth, accounting for nearly a third of the nation’s coal deposits.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (WPVI) — Several homes were evacuated after a massive sinkhole opened up on a Bethlehem street.

The hole was discovered Wednesday morning near the corner of Elm Street and Hamilton Street.

The earth opened up around 3 a.m., swallowing a utility worker from UGI and sending natural gas into the air.

Bobbi Rogers awoke to a fire horn and a fire truck out front of her home.

“All of sudden we see the guys – they were great, these guys were really fantastic – coming up, knocking on all the doors: ‘Get out of the house, get out of the house, get out of the house.’ Oh my god. 3 in the morning,” Rogers said.

Bethlehem firefighters evacuated two blocks on Hamilton Street.

A 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck near Tokyo, Japan, on Dec. 28,                                           according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. No tsunami warning was issued.

The quake hit northern Ibaraki Prefecture, but the temblor was felt in much of Tokyo, according to the Japan Times, which reported that “buildings in central Tokyo mildly swayed for several seconds.”

Ibaraki Preferecture is home to some 3 million people and is situated just north-east of Tokyo.

There were no reports of damage or injuries.

Some public transportation systems around Tokyo—the Tohoku and Kanto regions—stopped their operations temporarily.

There were also no anomalies detected at nearby nuclear power plants,                                    Nuclear Regulation Authority officials told public broadcaster NHK.                                                It later said tremors were felt around “wide areas” of the eastern coast of Japan.

The quake had a depth of about about 6.2 miles.

“The jolt registered an intensity of 6 minus on the Japanese seismic scale of zero to 7 in the city of Takahagi. An intensity of 5 plus was recorded in the city of Hitachi. Tremors were felt in wide areas of eastern Japan,” NHK reported.

(Caracas, Venezuela) .- For decades the east of Caracas was a reflection of the opulence of an oil country. That’s where the latest model cars were circulating, and people were walking in well-known suits.

Today, women are swarming with children in their arms and men with burdened faces  who beg or scrabble among the garbage to survive.

The small town of Hawthorne, Nevada has been hit by a string of earthquakes during the early hours of December 28, local media outlets report. According to MyNews 4, an NBC affiliate, the first earthquake was felt at around 12:18 a.m., local time, on Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2016. A second earthquake of magnitude 5.7 was then reported just four minutes later. Following this, there was an immediate aftershock of magnitude 3.6 just 11 minutes later at 12:29 a.m. This was followed by another small 3.9 magnitude earthquake. As of this writing, there was a fifth, larger aftershock of magnitude 5.7 that hit the area at around 1:13 a.m. In all, there were a total of seven noticeable earthquakes in a relatively short period of time.
