(CNN) Five law enforcement officers were shot and one of them killed after a barricaded suspect opened fire at an apartment complex in a Denver suburb, the Douglas County Sheriff said Sunday.

Two civilians also were shot and the suspect was shot and killed later by police, Sheriff Tony Spurlock said.

Deputy Zackari Parrish, 29, was killed. The four injured officers are in stable condition, Spurlock told reporters.

 

A massive fire has destroyed all cars in a 1,600 capacity multi-storey car park next to Liverpool’s Echo Arena.

The Liverpool International Horse Show was cancelled as firefighters tackled the huge blaze next to the venue on the city’s waterfront.

Up to 80 horses were evacuated and an evening session of the show was cancelled as firefighters tackled the blaze at the building at Kings Dock on Sunday evening.

Former footballer Mark Wright’s family were caught up in the fire after a car exploded into flames as they were making their way out of the car park.

She said the blaze started as a small engine fire in a Land Rover on the car park’s third floor but then quickly spread.

Merseyside Police said: ‘Initial investigations indicate that an accidental fire within a vehicle caused other cars to ignite.

‘We believe that all vehicles parked in the car park have been destroyed                     and advise owners to contact their insurance companies.’

United States will return Puerto Rico to Spain

Secret conversations are well advanced and an announcement is expected in the coming days

119 years after the Treaty of Paris, which enabled the transfer of ownership over Puerto Rico from Spain to the United States, Madrid and Washington have virtually finalized an agreement to return the jurisdiction of the Caribbean island to the European country, European, sources of the three countries confirmed endi.com.

The deal, which has been negotiated in secret for at least two years, is not official yet, but it has the approval of Presidents Donald Trump of the United States and Mariano Rajoy of Spain, and all that remains is to finalize certain technical details to make the anouncement.

An announcement is expected before the end of the year, but it is possible that the emergence of last-minute complications delayed the approval of the transfer until the first days of 2018. The agreement has to be approved by the US Congress, which was occupied until the last hours of its last session in the federal tax reform and did not have time to address this issue.

It was reported that the agreement enjoys overwhelming support in Congress.                 “This should have been done long ago. Moreover, the United States should never have taken possession of Puerto Rico. It was a mistake. Puerto Rico has cost us too much,        “said Alabama Republican Sen. Luke McCullen.

Due to the imminence of the agreement is why Washington has not approved the funds for the reconstruction of Puerto Rico after Hurricane Maria or to keep afloat the government’s health plan. They expect Spain to respond for these accounts.

According to sources, the talks began in 2015 after a joke that the German Finance Minister, Wolfgang -Schaueble, made to the then Secretary of the Treasury of the United States, Jacob Lew, telling him that the European Union would accept Puerto Rico as a member if The United States took over Greece. Lew, according to sources, wanted to play the joke on Spain’s finance minister, Jesus Galindo, who did not realize it was a joke and the next day approached US officials with a proposal already formalized and authorized by the government of Rajoy and for the Spanish Crown.

“Lew read the proposal with amusement, but as he read he realized that it made a lot of sense. That’s how this started, “said a White House source. Lew spoke about the issue to then President Barack Obama on the same days that Alejandro García Padilla announced that Puerto Rico had no way to pay its debt. “Go ahead,” Obama told him, according to sources.

It is not the first time that a colony has been transferred from one jurisdiction to another. Hong Kong went from British to Chinese domination in 1999.

The three political forces of Puerto Rico have not been consulted or had any participation in the talks. As part of the agreement, the United States will be responsible for half of the $ 120,000 million debt of Puerto Rico. Sources from the New Progressive Party (PNP) said that from their point of view they have no objection to the change if economic assistance is guaranteed at the same level as that now provided by the United States. The bus entered the pedestrian passage near the Slavyansky Boulevard subway station at around 3:50 p.m. local time (7:50 a.m. ET), where it hit a number of commuters, according to Russian state news agency TASS.

Footage posted on Russian state media shows what appears to be the bus careening down stairs leading to the passage, hitting several people before coming to a halt.

Police took the driver into custody but said that authorities are not treating the incident as a deliberate attack, according to state media.

Investigators are considering two possibilities — that the driver lost control of the bus or that the bus malfunctioned, state media reported. “The driver was detained and the authorities instituted a criminal case citing the services falling short of security requirements and encroachments on the safety regulations for public transport,” the TASS report said.

CN worker dies in accident near Melville

A Canadian National rail worker has died after a workplace accident near Melville on Friday, the Teamsters reported.

The union, which represents workers at CN, said the worker was a 26-year-old woman with approximately three years on the job.
